Nerdy Nails: Marvel's "Ant-Man"- inspired Manicure

I love Marvel movies, and always make sure to see them on opening night. I usually try to do a special mani to match the occasion if I have the time. I'll admit that while I don't know much about Ant-Man, I am a very big fan of Paul Rudd. So, in honor of his debut as the newest superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, today's manicure was inspired by Marvel's Ant-Mani. Check it out!

This first color is called Salsa by China Glaze. It is a classic red creme. It had a really nice formula, very easy to work with. I used two coats here on my forefingers and ring fingers, as well as the thumb art.

Next up, we have 4 in the Morning by OPI. This is from Gwen Stefani's first collaboration with OPI from a while back. This polish has a satin finish, and as you can see, it's got a little bit of shimmer to it. It's just a really gorgeous color, and it's the first time I've used it, but I love it. Great formula here, and dries beautifully. I used a top coat with this manicure, so I don't think you'll see any of the shimmer in the pictures, but it is nice with a top coat as well. I used two coats on my pinkies and middle fingers, but could easily have used just one. However, be careful, because this dries fast and if you're messing around, it can drag, and you don't want to do that because you'll have bald spots.

I originally wanted to use this next color for my stamping color, because it was a more gun metal color to match Ant-Man's suit, but it was not showing up the way I wanted it to. However, I did still want to incorporate this in some way, so I used this for the Ant-Man helmet. This is Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous by OPI. I found the formula a little watery, but not too bad. It's a little sheer on the first coat, but by the second, it builds to a nice full opacity.

For the stamping color, I ended up just using my tried and trusted silver go-to, which is Silver Sweep by Sally Hansen. This is a great little polish, and my gosh, does it work well with stamping plates. It's got a great formula, easy to work with, and it just pops out when you use it for nail art.

Speaking of stamping plates, the plate I used for this manicure is BM-422 from the 2013 CYO Collection by Bundle Monster. I found these on Amazon for around $16 for a whole set of 26 plates. Totally worth it, as you get a wide variety of designs, and you have so much to experiment with. I used the hexagon design since it matched the design of Ant-Man's suit.

For the little ant design, I used a simple black cream polish called Black Out by Pure Ice which is a really cheap brand, but gets the job done when I'm doing nail art, so I've yet to buy another black polish. It's actually not bad for a bargain brand when using it for full coverage. For now, however, I only used this with a dotting tool. I am terrible with doing tiny lines for the legs. so I cheated, and used a Sharpie Fine point marker.

For the ombre effect on my ring finger, I did a base of Salsa, because using white made the red look way too bright. On my makeup sponge, I used the gradient of Salsa, Lost on Lombard from the San Francisco Collection by OPI as the middle blending shade, and then Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous. This is my first time doing the ombre nail, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. For next time, I will try to use a protective layer of glue around my cuticles and skin, because Salsa stained like crazy. Lost on Lombard is one of my all-time favorite colors. I love it especially for fall as it's a more brick-red color, very nice, warm tone to it. The formula is great, too.

And here is the finished product:

I realize my ant could use more legs, but every time I drew it on paper, it looked terrible, and more like a spider. This was a lot of fun coming up with something for this movie. I'll be seeing it tonight, and rocking my new mani! I wish I'd done these posts for all the other Marvel films, because I have done manicures for Black Widow, Loki, Rocket Raccoon, and my fave, Captain America. Maybe when I have some extra time, I'll re-do them and do a new post.

  1. Heyho, I just wanted to stop by and show you my ant-man nails since I stumbled upon your blog while searching for inspiration (and I found it.. who would've thought of ants for ant-man-nails.. not me, huehuehue, owell)

    1. I love your Ant-Man nails! They look great! :D Yeah, there wasn't much or really anything for Ant-Man nail art when I did these for the movie.
